This illustrated lecture is an introduction to the South Yorkshire-born inventor and polymath Joseph Bramah (1748/49 – 1814). It is aimed at tempting those who know little about him to discover more. Hopefully it should contain enough subsidiary information to excite the interests of potential Bramah scholars too.

The talk is intended to demonstrate that Bramah’s innovations in the disciplines of sanitary engineering, lock making, fire engine development and the practical uses of hydraulic power – as well as the inventor’s pioneering introduction of precision and mass production into metalwork manufacture – had a lasting impact on industrial progress.

In deciding what to include, the talk ventures beyond Joseph’s lifespan to introduce later manufacturers who advanced Bramah’s trail-blazing works within their own contemporary fields.
