Of the gases involved in life, oxygen is the most important!
This lecture relates the history of measurement of oxygen in medicine, as a gas, in solution in bodily fluids and on haemoglobin; from the Haldane apparatus to Pulse Oximetry.
As a gas:
- Haldane
- Paramagnetic
- (Raman spectroscopy)*
- (Mass spectroscopy)*
- Acoustic
- Fuel Cell
Dissolved in Plama:
- Clark electrode
Attached to Haemoglobin:
- Non-invasive “Oximetry”
- Pulse Oximetry
*Research only
