Why join?

The importance of the study of the history of engineering and technology is increasingly recognised: much has to be learned about the inventive process, technology transfer, and the relationship between technology and society which is the basis of modern wealth and culture.

The Society's meetings and publications have long played an important part in advancing knowledge and understanding in many areas of technology and invention. By joining The Newcomen Society you are helping to promote, encourage and co-ordinate the study of this important subject. Find out how to join.

The benefits of membership

Membership of the Newcomen Society offers you the opportunity to participate in all the activities of the Society:

  • Regular evening meetings
Meetings at which papers are presented provide a lively and illuminating forum for discussion. The vitality of the Society comes from the interplay between those with personal experience of a specific trade or industry and those who have been studying its history

  • Summer meetings
As a Member, you will be able to take part in the annual residential summer meetings, which take place in different venues, in the UK and abroad. These combine a programme of visits with evening lectures and social activities, at which members' families or friends are welcome. (See for example a report on our highly enjoyable and successful recent Summer Meeting in Brabant).

  • Local visits
Members can also enjoy the one-day visits that we organise to places of interest in or near London, and the local visits arranged by our Branches.

  • Publications
Members receive a regular newsletter, Links (the Bulletin of the Newcomen Society), which contains news of the Society and its activities, letters, short papers and notices of other things of interest. Members also receive twice a year issues of Transactions of the Newcomen Society.

Members are welcome to submit to the Society's Editorial Board papers for presentation at a meeting, or for publication.
