Every February the Society holds a social evening in London.

This event is held in the Art Workers Guild. The building, in Queen Square, Bloomsbury, is a fine Queen Anne house - the hall contains interesting portraits of many famous artists and craftsmen of the past.

At our social evening, members gather at 6.30pm in the hall for a preliminary drink. Members then give ten-minute talks, illustrated with slides. These presentations often centre round members' slides from a spring or summer meeting, but the talk can be on any examples of historical engineering or technology of interest.

At half-time, there is wine and a buffet supper in the fine Committee Room. The food is generally cooked and served by members of the Society and their friends, who kindly volunteer their time and their excellent cooking skills.

After supper there are more illustrated talks, for example on :

  • the Society's summer visit to Brabant
  • Spanish sugar-cane mills
  • a visit to China
  • open-cast mines in Spain
  • the Society's recent visit to Australia
  • acoustic surveillance for aeroplanes

This event comes at a very reasonable price (£20 in 2007), and has always proved an excellent occasion, much enjoyed by all.
