More about us - the Newcomen Society emblem

In 1923 Loughnan Pendred, one of the founder members and second President of the Society, introduced the idea of an emblem. The heraldic design of a griffen was approved, signifying vigilance, and represented as looking backward while yet going forward. The motto, Actorum memores simul affectamus agenda expresses this idea. Translated literally it reads "mindful of things that have taken place, at the same time we strive after things yet to be done" - or more simply: "we look back but go forward".

The original design, by Alec Buckles of the Royal College of Art, took the form of a woodcut measuring approximately 2 inches by 3 inches. The design was first used in Transactions in 1923.
